A buyer’s guide to womenswear fabrics

What the most common fabrics do, how they behave and what to watch for when you sample.

Woven and knit

Woven fabrics are made by interlacing yarns and are stable and structured. Knit fabrics are made of interlocking loops and stretch.

Most dresses, coats and sets are woven. Woven garments give a crisp line; knit garments are comfortable and easy to fit.

Fabrics common in modest wear

Jacquard satin is a satin weave with a woven pattern, so it combines sheen with texture and is common in occasion dresses. Cupro is a silky, breathable regenerated fibre with a smooth fall. Modal is a soft regenerated fibre that drapes well. Tencel (lyocell) is smooth and soft with good drape. Textured polyester (DTY) holds its shape, resists creasing and suits coats and capes. Quilted fabrics are stitched layers with padding, used for vests and coats.

The best fabric depends on the garment, the season, the price point and how your customers wash and wear it.

Care and shrinkage

Fibre content decides care instructions. Regenerated and natural fibres can shrink on washing; ask for shrinkage testing if your customers will machine wash.

Always approve a sample in the production fabric, not a substitute.
